Come Write Among the Stacks

...of books, that is!

A Good Book Bookstore in Sumner will be hosting their next night of writing on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2019.  It starts at 7 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m.

From their event announcement: "If you or someone you know is a writer, they are invited to A Good Book's once a month Write Time.  It is FREE.  Bring your computer or notebook, bring a writing buddy, bring a snack to share.  This is a fantastic opportunity to meet your neighbor writers, chat, ask questions, and write, write, write.  See you Tuesday at 7 at the bookstore."

I have attended a number of these Write Time events and both love being surrounded and inspired by all of the books - as well as being distracted by looking at them.  There are so many fun little nooks and crannies to sit in and write by yourself or larger areas to sit at a table with a group of other writers to talk about your works-in-progress or bounce ideas off of one another.  It is a great opportunity to write and to meet other local writers and I think our area is lucky to have a business that's willing to open its doors in support of writers.

A Good Book is located at 1014 Main St., Sumner, WA 98390.  Their website can be found here.

  1. I really have a hard time not talking to people at this event, but I've learned, and will hole myself up in one of the nooks to scribble away. The people who attend are very kind and leave me to myself, but remain open to back-and-forth once I've committed some words to paper.

One of my favorite nights here, there was a writer who was writing a fan fiction, and she was very down on herself about it. The property she was writing about is not one of the big ones (like Buffy or Anime titles), and she was embarrassed to call her work "writing" at all! Well, she was at a table with some very supportive fellow writers who encouraged her to tell her story out loud to the table, and just was loved up like nobody's business! She read some very exciting passages aloud, and now I see her every month, muttering to herself and typing madly on her laptop. Sometimes she laughs and shakes her head at the antics of her characters. She is a happy writer, and that's something to celebrate.

I can't wait to see her again this month and ask her how her story is doing. And then I shall dutifully hide myself in a corner until I have scribbled out my allotment of words. :)

    1. Well, it's all about balance, of course. People are there to write in a different space and to meet other writers, so you are taking part in both of those aims. I agree with you, though, that the people that have attended when I have been there have all been very kind and open to at least meeting and talking a bit about what everyone is writing or working on at the time.

Oh, my, she needn't be down on herself about writing fan fiction - even if it isn't a mainstream one. I have met a number of writers during NaNoWriMo who all write fan fiction of various types. It is all writing. And many writers who are published now started learning by writing fan fiction. It's great that you all encouraged her to share and to keep writing! That's what getting together as a community of writers is really all about!
